Luxembourg and Trier

Nothing will get you into the Christmas spirit than a ryanair sale German Christmas markets! But seriously our flights into Luxembourg were €19 round trip so. . .

Oh yea and they were empty.

We flew Sunday – Tuesday the first weekend in December. Hearing Luxembourg was a bit zzzz and not wanting to unpack and repack we spent both nights in Trier at Romantik Hotel Zur Glocke (a bit dear, but hotels in Trier were cheaper than Lux too so). Before you ask, the reason we chose Trier was that it’s meant to have one of the best/oldest Christmas markets.

Upon a too early arrival in Luxembourg we went for a (very) rainy wander

before breakfast at La Table du Pain. Even if you don’t know a ton of French. . . . that translates to Table of Bread. Sign. Me. Up.

By the time we had indulged in a carby carby breakfast, the Christmas markets in Luxembourg were still not quite getting going. So we made a quick stop at the Luxembourg City Museum which was really cool–highly recommend. Especially if its raining. Also there is a weirdly huge elevator.

We spent almost two hours at the museum, so we were market-ready upon departure. Luxembourg’s markets spread across the city, but my favourite bit was around the ice skating rink with lots of fire pits to toast your buns near .

So that was basically our day in Luxembourg. We also slipped into a artisan/art market—but it was a lot of expensive amazing art and being the ugly american tourists we are I brought my gluhwein in and was nervous about spilling the whole time.

From there it was train time to Trier. he loves train time. because train time is computer time.

It rained the whole time we were in Trier. We got there Sunday evening and the local artisan fair there was only on Friday-Sunday so we went there first (just next to the Ponte Negro)

We bought nothing (except gluhwein–opting for white this time). Then we headed over to the main market in Trier. Greeted by a traditional German Christmas pyramid which never fail to remind me of my brother. We have one of these. And despite our various abilities, we always put it together wrong / can’t get it going / can only get it going backwards. Every. Year.

Anyways. The market. Did I mention it rained the whole time?

Thank god for the huts.

We had grand plans to explore more Roman ruins, but again. So rainy. So the market was really our biggest / best / only excursion.

The best part of Trier’s market for us was the second night when Myk Sno performed on the main / center stage. He was super soulful and now we think of him everytime we hear “easy on Sunday morning.”

myk sno

I don’t think this man originally from Pittsburgh was traditional Christmas market entertainment but we loved it. And so did all the (50 years old +) Continental Europeans around us.
