Being American During Election Week

Questions you are frequently asked when you are an American living in Ireland (during the presidential election lead up, election and fall out).

Q: Does the American media cover Irish politics as incessantly as Irish media covers the American election?

Spoiler: no.

Q: Who are you (did you) vote for?

This can be from friends, strangers, cashiers… anyone. American politics is fair game as casual Irish conversation goes.

Q: How did this happen?

Q: Oh. You’re American? Are you OK?

Notice these questions make a blatant assumption that I am on a certain side.

Q: Why do you use the electoral college?

Q: What is the electoral college?

Q: What is the difference between the house and the senate?

Q: So you’re staying in Ireland, then?
